  • The technique used by Derren Brown is called “handshake interruption” (was created by Milton H. Erickson, MD and further developed by Richard Bandler, co-creator of NLP) which is a particular case of a pattern interruption (or shock induction). The idea behind the handsahke interruption is that handshaking is an automatic program, when you see their hand you don’t wonder “why is he extending his hand? What does that mean?”, you simply respond by shaking their hand. If the process is interrupted, the conscious mind goes “blank” for a second trying to figure out what the interruption means and what to do next, in that state of confusion you can induce a hypnotic trance. The same thing happens when you’re in a building and a fire starts, when you hear the alarm and see people running you are paralyzed for a second trying to figure out what to do, if during that state someone yells “this way” you won’t stop to consciously think if he is right, if you have better chances of survival going the other way, etc. you simply follow their “order”. Try it yourself, when someone is lifting their had to shake yours (and you’re making the movement to shake theirs), grab their right hand with your left hand and lift it above their eyes and start making an induction (if you know how) and then tell them to close their eyes. This technioque won’t work with everyone but it will work with about 40% of people. There’s a better explanation here: http://hypnoticadvancements.com/language… you can find many videos of the handshake on youtube (Especially the videos from this user http://www.youtube.com/user/Mayajid ) By the way, he was not under Derren’s CONTROL. Hypnosis doesn’t give you control over others, it only makes them more suggestible but it is them who decide whether or not to follow your suggestions

  • Just to add here that there would also have been a some priming before the handshake induction took place.
